Celebrate 150 years of the Settle & Carlisle Railway

The Settle and Carlisle Railway opened to passenger trains back in 1876, so why not mark the 150th anniversary with a day out by steam along this world-famous rail route?

The Cumbrian Mountain Express will depart from Runcorn, Liverpool Lime Street and Broad Green on Saturday, July 11, to travel over two of England’s most scenic rail routes. On the outward journey this special train will be joined by an historic steam locomotive at Carnforth and head north over the dramatic Cumbrian Fells with steep climbs up to Shap and Grayrigg and steam through beautiful Lune Gorge.

At Carlisle, there will be chance for you to explore this ancient border city’s castle, cathedral, museum, shops and cafes.

Then rejoin your steam train for the highlight of the day a journey over the stunning Settle & Carlise Line with views of the mighty Three Peaks, a climb to the highest railway summit in England at Ais Gill and a run over the iconic Ribblehead Viaduct.

Scenic North Wales coast

On Sunday, July 12, The North Wales Coast Express will leave Liverpool Lime Street and Broad Green. With a choice of visiting seaside Llandudno, historic Bangor or Holyhead this promises to be a great day out with something for all the family.

At Chester the train will steam through the ancient city walls then cross the River Dee into Wales. Sit back and enjoy the views of the Wirral Peninsula as you steam along the Dee Estuary and steam past the resorts of Prestatyn, Rhyl and Colwyn Bay.

At Llandudno Junction you can change for a short service train journey into Llandudno to enjoy an afternoon at the seaside.

Alternatively, stay on board as The North Wales Coast Express crosses the Conwy estuary, where the castle overlooks the town and bridge, then runs close to the sea to Bangor, where you can spend the afternoon exploring this historic city with its cathedral or continue across the Menai Strait onto the Isle of Anglesey to visit the seaport of Holyhead.
