The 21-year-old’s been unlucky with injuries since his summer move to the League One side.

What’s been said

Gibson missed the opening months of the season and only made his debut in October against Mansfield in the Papa John’s Trophy.

However, in his following game against Bolton, the centre-back suffered a hamstring issue. He’s now back on Merseyside receiving treatment.

Wednesday boss Darren Moore has admitted he’s in talks with Everton over terminating Gibson’s season-long loan prematurely in January.

Speaking to the Sheffield Star, Moore said: “He’s back at Everton and we don’t foresee him coming back because of the length of the injury.

“Right now we’re just discussing what’s the best course of action going forward. We’re due a phone call with Everton any moment now.

“We’ve been going back and forth but in terms of reaching a final decision with him we’re waiting to see.”

‘I’m gutted’

Gibson had been earmarked to be a key player for Wednesday in their bid for an immediate return to the Championship.

Following a difficult period at Reading last season, making only 13 appearances, luck continues to go against the former Newcastle defender.

Moore added: “It’s a big blow for us. I’m gutted because I wanted the Sheffield Wednesday supporters and everybody to see what Lewis is about.

“He’s a fantastic young player, a wonderful player with a bright future ahead of him. We had him here but it’s unfortunate that we only got to see 45 minutes of him in the Bolton game and even then he picked up the injury 20 minutes into the first half.

“The Wednesday fans only got to see a short time of him which is a shame really.”
