Michael Carrick heaped praise on Donny van de Beek following his bright start at Everton.

The Dutchman endured a difficult 18 months after joining Manchester United from Ajax for £35 million in the summer of 2020.

This season, he made just eight Premier League appearances for the Red Devils before completing a loan switch to Goodison Park on January transfer deadline day.

What’s been said

Everton have won one and lost four of those games, with the 24-year-old primarily being deployed in a midfield three.

Van de Beek is set to play a key role as the Blues aim to pull themselves out of the relegation mire.

And Carrick believes Frank Lampard must ensure van de Beek is given the licence to get ‘in and around the box’ to be at his very best.

Speaking to Premier League Productions, former Man Utd caretaker boss Carrick said: “I am delighted for Donny. He is a terrific lad. Great attitude.

“Football is funny, at times. Sometimes things don’t work how you want them to work for a variety of reasons when you make a move to a certain club.

"I am delighted he is playing. He needed games.

"He obviously didn’t have enough, he will be saying, over the last year or so.

“He’s so versatile as well. He has got different strengths. He has played in a three tonight [in the 5-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur] but I think he is really dangerous in and around the box.

“But he is really clever in and around the box.”

Van de Beek is contracted at Manchester United until the summer of 2025.

He’s likely to start for Everton once again when Wolves visit Goodison Park on Sunday (14.00).
