Egypt, the most successful team in the history of Africa, led by Mohamed Salah will come up against the Teranga Lions of Senegal in the AFCON final, with club teammate Sadio Mane their talisman.

The two Liverpool stars are their nation’s captains, and will face off on Sunday for continental bragging rights.

Senegal are hoping it will be third time lucky for their golden generation, who fell at the final hurdle three years ago, losing to Algeria in the final.

The Egyptian federation asked CAF if they could move the final by a day, to give them more time to recover after coming through three extra-time games in the knockouts.

But that seems to have fallen on deaf ears, and Mohamed Salah’s Pharaohs will now try to extend Egypt’s AFCON record with an eighth title, after just one training session before the finale.

The mood in Senegal

Dakar, the capital, is already preparing for a carnival, having come close to winning the competition twice in the past.

The Teranga Lions were losing finalists in 2002 and 2019, but there is the confidence in the west African country that this is their time to finally lift the AFCON trophy.

Mane is the main talent to come out of Senegal in recent years, but he will have to win the cup to prove he is the best Senegalese player of all time.

As well as the Liverpool ace, Senegal also have arguably the best goalkeeper in the world in Chelsea’s Edouard Mendy and Napoli’s colossal Kalidou Koulibaly at centre-back.

They are the bookies favourites going into the AFCON final.

The mood in Egypt

The people of Cairo didn’t give their team a chance to reach the final, especially after the opening day defeat to Nigeria, but they have re-adjusted and found a way to grind out wins.

The Pharaohs have an astonishing record in this tournament, having won their last six penalty shoot outs, which has given them confidence in their defensive tactics.

They are the AFCON record holders with seven titles, but they haven’t lifted the trophy for more than a decade, and Mohamed Salah will hope this will cement his name in Egyptian footballing folklore.
