What’s been said

He missed wins over Norwich City and Burnley in the opening two matches of the campaign with an ankle injury.

Robertson told liverpoolfc.com: “Obviously, when the negotiations started and it looked as if my future was going to be here longer term than what it was, then I think it’s no secret that I’m happy at this club.

“I want to stay at this club for as long as possible and to extend my stay, it’s always a happy time for me, for my family. We’re settled here, we love everything about this football club and I’m glad that the journey is continuing.

“I’m certainly one, and I know a lot of people in this training ground just now are people to look forward and people [who want] to create more history, more stories. Hopefully people get bored of me when I’ve retired and I can sit down for hours and hours and tell them about all the stories!

“They’re certainly building up but I want to make more and obviously hopefully starting with this season. We want to achieve more, we want to bring hopefully more trophies, more happiness to this club.

“I’ve trained today and I’ll have a full week of training so let’s see what happens against Chelsea. But I’ll be ready, I’ll be ready to play and  hopefully be fit for the rest of the season now.”

Background

Robertson has proven a shrewd acquisition since signing for Liverpool from Hull City in 2017.

He cost the Reds just £8 million and it has proved to be a bargain buy.

Under Jurgen Klopp’s tutelage, Robertson has developed into one of the best left-backs in the world.

In the 2018-19 season, he played a crucial role in helping Liverpool claim their sixth European Cup with a 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur in the final in Madrid.

The following campaign, Robertson was just as important as the Reds ended their 31-year wait for a top-flight title.

In total, the former Dundee United defender has made 177 appearances for Klopp’s side, scoring five goals.

He was also appointed Scotland captain in September 2018.

Who’s next in line?

While Liverpool’s activity in the transfer market has been subdued this summer, with Ibrahima Konate’s £36 million arrival from RB Leipzig the only signing made so far, they have been securing the futures of their prized asset.

Robertson is the sixth player to commit his future, following in the footsteps of Trent Alexander-Arnold (2025), Virgil van Dijk (2025) Fabinho (2026), Harvey Elliott (2026) and Alisson Becker (2027) to do so. All are highly valuable commodities.

In addition, the Reds have been looking to ensure that  captain Jordan Henderson and Mohamed Salah sign fresh agreements.

Klopp’s been relaxed about Henderson’s future, with his current deal expiring in 2023.

Salah’s comes to a close at the same time and Liverpool will reportedly have to make him the biggest offer they’ve ever made to one of their players.
