'Great replacement' - Ex-Man Utd midfielder backs Liverpool manager target to succeed

Next Liverpool manager: The former Manchester United midfielder has given the Liverpool target a glowing review.

Former Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic has given Liverpool target Ruben Amorim a glowing review amid the reports of a move.

This summer will see a managerial change at Anfield for the first time since 2015 and it’s unclear at the current time who will take over the reigns after Jurgen Klopp departs. With such huge shoes to fill, it is going to be difficult for whoever steps in and the latest reports suggest it could be Ruben Amorim after the likes of Xabi Alonso and Roberto De Zerbi were ruled out.

Matic was once a teammate of Amorim at Benfica and speaking on the Portuguese manager, who is currently on track for a cup and league success with Sporting this season, Matic claimed he has everything needed to be prosperous on Merseyside. “Ruben Amorim is an excellent person,” Matic told O Jogo. “He was one of those who helped me the most when I arrived at Benfica because he speaks English very well. I hope he hasn’t forgotten how to speak it now! (laughs).

“I see Ruben Amorim at a big club, I don't know if it will be Liverpool, but if it happens I'm sure he'll be a great replacement for Klopp because Ruben understands football and has the personality and character to be a great coach - he already currently is. I would like to see him in the Premier League. Let's see what happens from now on.”

Recent weeks have seen Amorim become bombarded with questions about his future, with the Portuguese revealing during last week’s press conference that: "This is the last time I'm going to talk about my future. There was no interview and certainly no agreement. The only thing we all want here is to be champions with Sporting, nothing will change. I'm the Sporting coach and there was no interview or agreement with any club.

"I'm just focused, as always, on representing my club. As I no longer have anything else to say. There will be no interviews or agreements with the Sporting coach. The matter is completely resolved, whether related to this club or another.”
