Luis Diaz’s scintillating start as a Liverpool player continued in Saturday’s defeat of Brighton and Hove Albion.

The winger signed for the Reds from Porto for a fee of up to £50 million with add-ons in the January transfer window.

Diaz has hit the ground running at Anfield and has already become a key player.

He opened the scoring in the 2-0 victory at Brighton with a brave header, which should have earned home keeper Robert Sanchez a red card.

It was Diaz’s second goal since his arrival and he’s strengthened Jurgen Klopp’s attacking options markedly.

A key reason why Liverpool swooped for the Colombia international in the winter window was because of Tottenham Hotspur’s interest.

Spurs were close to prising Diaz to north London before the Reds hijacked the move.

Liverpool had been planning to wait until the summer to lodge a bid for the 25-year-old.

And Jamie Carragher couldn’t help but mock Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy for forcing Klopp’s hand earlier than planned.

Kop legend Carragher wrote on Twitter: “Luis Diaz’s impact could turn this season into a special one for @LFC  the club only signed him in January because Spurs made an offer, thanks Daniel!”

Liverpool return to action when they travel to Arsenal on Wednesday night.

The Reds are now three points behind Manchester City in the Premier League title race.
