A stoppage-time strike from substitute Divock Origi sent Liverpool top of the Premier League with a dramatic 1-0 win at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.

Origi, who replaced Jordan Henderson on 68 minutes, collected a Mohamed Salah pass and finished past goalkeeper Jose Sa from close range deep into injury time.

Liverpool forward Diogo Jota had come close to opening the scoring on his return to Molineux Stadium but his shot hit defender Conor Coady on the line.

Bruno Lage’s battling Wolves side were 60 seconds away from becoming the first team to stop Liverpool scoring this season.

With Chelsea losing 3-2 at West Ham United earlier in the day, Origi’s last-gasp winner sent the Reds bench into wild celebrations as they leapfrogged the Blues at top of the table.

Manchester City will move into pole position in the Premier League if they beat Watford at Vicarage Road in Saturday’s late game.

Jurgen Klopp’s reaction to late win at Wolves

“We played a lot of good stuff, it wasn’t easy and when the game is 0-0 you feel the pressure when you want this result so badly,” Klopp told BBC Sport.

“Divock Origi, the legend, finished it off and it’s a great story. He’s one of the best finishers I’ve ever seen in my life.

“In this great team, with our front three, he doesn’t play all the time but he is a very positive boy, loves the club, wants to contribute and he did in an incredible way.”

Klopp added: “We had to fight against an opponent that changed their approach. They normally are a footballing side but we didn’t see much of that today.

“They defended deep with a lot of players and went for counter attacks and it’s really difficult as there’s no-one as quick as [Adama] Traore.

“It was a massive challenge for our concentration as we missed massive chances with Diogo but you have to stay in the game, which is what we did.

‘Go out and be Divock’

Those were the five simple words that Klopp said to Origi as he sent the striker on as a second-half substitute to change the game at Molineux Stadium.

The Belgian did just that, although he left it until the 94th minute.

“It was a huge win for us,” Origi told Liverpool’s official website after the match. “I would say we all enjoyed it a lot.”

“We knew that today was going to be a hard game defensively, as well as offensively,” he added.

“They were well organised but in the end we found the solution and that’s what we do it for.

“In the end, getting that win, getting that goal is the best feeling.”

Reaction from Wolves after late heartbreak

Wolves manager Bruno Lage told Match of the Day: “My players did everything I asked of them. The plan was to try to create problems for Liverpool, one of the best teams in the league and one of the best teams in the world, with great players and a great coach.

“We created a lot of problems and the three guys up front did fantastic work. We lose one ball and after five seconds they score a goal.”
