Liverpool have been handed a boost in the race to sign Paris Saint Germain star Kylian Mbappe, as Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti admitted he ‘does not know’ if the Spanish giants will sign the Frenchman.

The Reds have been long-term admirers of Mbappe, but any previous hopes of signing the former Monaco striker seemed distant, as Real Madrid have always thought to have been leading the race for his signature.

The former Clairefontaine academy graduate looked as if he was set to sign for Madrid, as they had two bids of £180 million, and £200 million knocked back by PSG, as the Parisians looked to gamble on the fact he would sign a new deal.

It was always thought that Mbappe would be the heir to Cristiano Ronaldo, the former marquee player in Madrid. But now, the predicted future for Mbappe could turn out different as Ancelotti casts doubts over signing him.

Mbappe is out of contract in the summer, and also turned 23 last month, so therefore can be approached by other clubs in Europe.

Asked if his side could try to make a move for Mbappe in the January window, Ancelotti suggested Madrid are more likely to make an approach in the summer.

“I don’t know. We think we will continue to fight for titles,” Ancelotti said.

“It’s an interesting moment because we’re back in La Liga, we have the Copa del Rey on Wednesday. It’s an important moment. [Moving for Mbappe is] the last thing to do, which I think is what will happen on June 30.”

It was thought that the signing of one of Mbappe’s idols, Lionel Messi, would tempt the 23-year-old into signing a new contract, but PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino admits talks have stagnated.

Mbappe himself has spoken on his future, and said: “No, I’m not joining Real Madrid in January. In January it’s not happening. I’m with Paris Saint-Germain, I’m really happy and I will 100 percent finish the season as a PSG player. I’ll give everything to win Paris all the titles this year.

“The only thing on my mind is to beat Real Madrid in Champions League. We are ready and I am ready to play and give everything for PSG.”
