Assistant manager Pep Lijnders was on pre-match media duties ahead of the trip to Carrow Road and provided the latest of Trent Alex-Arnold, Thiago, Roberto Firmino, Harvey Elliott and Neco Williams’ fitness.

The right-back missed Saturday’s 3-0 defeat of Crystal Palace due to illness, although it is not Covid-19. James Milner was forced to deputise.

Lijnders said: “Even when he felt a bit ill, he wanted to play. We took the decision to take him out.

“We wanted to sort the situation with experience but we got so much more. James dominated the flank offensively. Big respect for James in that way.

“Trent is still not feeling 100%. He will hopefully do some jogging but is out for tomorrow and hopefully ready for the weekend.”

The Spain international limped out of the Eagles victory with a calf injury.

“It was a shame because he was taking the game by the hand and had a real influence on our offensive play,” said Lijnders.

“He will not be ready for tomorrow or for the weekend [against Brentford]. We’re waiting for the scan result then can make a proper diagnosis.”

The Brazil international continues his comeback from a hamstring injury he suffered against Chelsea last month.

Lijnders said: “Bobby will start part of team training and is progressing really well but will not be involved tomorrow. Hopefully, we can make him ready for the games coming.”

The 18-year-old underwent an operation last week after dislocating his ankle against Leeds earlier this month.

“Harvey is Harvey - a young boy. He deals with it outstandingly,” said Lijnders.

“We have so many players who have had a long-term injury. Our group is a proper family. When it happened, Naby [Keita] had tears in his eyes and Curtis [Jones] was emotional.

“We lost one of our better midfielders but he deals with it really well. We have a really strong medical department and try to support them as good as we can.”

Neco Williams

The Wales international would have played if fit but continues his recovery from a setback.

Lijnders added: “Neco Williams is progressing really well but is not ready for tomorrow.”
