Liverpool player ratings, heroes and villains as Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota shine in 2-0 victory over Leicester

Diogo Jota bagged a double as Mo Salah made his return in Liverpool’s defeat of Leicester City to keep the pressure on Manchester City.

Liverpool moved back within nine points of Premier League leaders Manchester City with a 2-0 victory over Leicester City at Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp’s side were not at their scintillating best but deserved all three points, with Luis Diaz catching the eye on his full debut.

Liverpool started on the front foot and got their rewards in the 34th minute.

Virgil van Dijk’s powerful header was saved by visiting keeper Kasper Schmeichel but Diogo Jota was there to sweep home the loose ball from close range.

The Reds continued to dominate in the second period but were struggling to create any real gilt-edged chances.

Mo Salah - back from suffering AFCON final heartbreak with Egypt - was introduced in a bid to spark life into Liverpool.

In the 75th minute, he was handed a golden chance to double the lead when Leicester midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall lost possession and Salah was left one-on-one with Schmeichel - but saw his shot saved.

Then three minutes later, Salah almost produced a moment of magic when his curling left-footed effort from the edge of the box crashed against the woodwork with Schmeichel well beaten.

But Liverpool would wrap up all three points in 86th minute when Jota crashed home his second of the game.
