The staggering fee Liverpool will have to pay to sign ex-Everton target Luis Diaz in January

Jurgen Klopp supposedly wants the Porto winger to cover Mo Salah and Sadio Mane’s AFCON absences.

Liverpool will have to stump up a whopping €80 million if they want to sign Porto's Luis Diaz in January.

And the winger will get a chance to persuade the Reds if he's worth the hefty fee when the Portugal outfit travel to Anfield in the Champions League next week.

Who is Luis Diaz?

Diaz came through the ranks at Barranquilla in his native Colombia before sealing a switch to Junior in 2017.

He bagged 20 goals in 108 games for the Categoría Primera A outfit before sealing a move to Porto two years later for €7 million.

At the Portuguese club, he's won a Primeira Liga crown and netted 36 times in 111 appearances.

Impressively, this term Diaz has plundered 11 goals in just 16 outings.

The 24-year-old is also a regular for Colombia and finished as joint-top scorer with Lionel Messi during last summer's Copa America.

Why do Liverpool want him?

According to Spanish newspaper AS, Diaz is Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp's favoured option in January to cover Mo Salah and Sadio Mane.

The pair will be unavailable for a period after the turn of the year when at the African Cup of Nations representing Egypt and Senegal respectively.

However, reports in Portugal suggest Porto will look to fend off interest when the window opens in just more than a month.

Record claims they'll slap an €80 million price tag on Diaz and the wide man made an agreement to stay until the end of the season.

Would Liverpool pay that fee?

If the Reds were to meet Porto's demands, it would place Diaz only behind Virgil van Dijk in terms of the club's record signings.

It was in January 2018 when Liverpool splashed out £75 million for the centre-back from Southampton.

However, Klopp has traditionally been cautious in January and not paid inflated fees many clubs suggest.

Diaz will travel to Anfield with Porto for a Champions League Group B match on Tuesday 24 November.
