Notts County striker Macaulay Langstaff sets sights on fresh achievement after breaking record

Notts County striker Macaulay Langstaff has set his sights on more achievements after he set a new goals record for the Magpies.

The former Gateshead frontman scored his 40th goal of the season as Luke Williams’ side boosted their hopes of securing the National League title with a 2-0 win at Altrincham on Tuesday night.

It was a historic night for Langstaff as the in-demand striker’s strike means he has scored more goals in a single season than any player in County’s history.

Remarkably, he is also now just one goal away from setting a similar record in the National League, as he matched the season high 40 goals scored by Dover Athletic’s Ricky Miller during the 2016/17 season.

Speaking after securing his place in Magpies history, Langstaff told BBC Radio Nottingham:

“To score the most goals ever for Notts in a league season is an unbelievable feeling.

“It’s a special feeling. I’ve been thinking about this one more than any other record. I’ve enjoyed myself so much this year, being part of the history at this special, special club which has been unbelievable to me. The National League record is one league and Notts County’s all-time leading scorer in a season is every single league. This means the most to me.”

Langstaff also hailed the impact County manager Williams has made in pushing him to beat the record set by club legend Tom Keetly over 90 years ago.

He said: “The gaffer keeps giving me new records to beat to keep me motivated. These are motivating factors. I will try to keep going. I don’t like setting targets because if you do reach them you feel like you have got there almost and become comfortable with your goalscoring tally.

“At the end of the season I will look back and see if I am happy. Twenty is sort of the standard target so to get 40 is unbelievable. Regardless of the records I try to score every game. Once you reach a record you have to go again.”

Langstaff will hope to add to his incredible tally when his side host Wealdstone on Good Friday.
