When will Everton and Liverpool name 25-man Premier League squads? Dates and who could miss out explained

We’re edging closer to the day Everton and Liverpool must name their 25-man Premier League squads for the 2021-22 season.

After doing so, Toffees boss Rafa Benitez and Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp will not be able to make changes to their respective set-ups again until the closure of the January transfer window.

When must the squads be submitted?

Our sister title NewcastleWorld asked the Premier League to reveal details of the cut-off point and it said clubs had until ‘the end of the week’ to submit their squads.

It also expects to release a statement on all clubs’ squads on Friday.

So Liverpool’s trip to Leeds United on Sunday (16.30 BST) and Everton’s visit of Burnley next Monday (20.00 BST) are set to be the first games of the season where the rules will be strictly implemented.

What are the rules when it comes to overseas players?

Premier League clubs can name no more than 17 overseas players in the 25-man squad.

The remaining eight berths have to be homegrown players.

Someone classified as homegrown must have played for a team affiliated with the FA or Welsh FA for at least three years or three full seasons before the age of 21.

Everton have Asmir Begovic, Andy Lonergan, Jordan Pickford, Seamus Coleman, Ben Godfrey, Mason Holgate, Jonjoe Kenny, Michael Keane, Fabian Delph, Tom Davies, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Demarai Gray, Alex Iwobi and Andros Townsend who fall into that category.

The Reds currently have seven homegrown players in Trent Alexander-Arnold, Caoimhin Kelleher, Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Nat Phillips.

How are under-21s taken into account?

Anyone born after January 1, 2000 does not count towards the squad cap.

That means Everton duo Jarrad Branthwaite, 19, and Anthony Gordon, 20, are exempt.

For Liverpool, 18-year-old Harvey Elliott - who’s started the past two games - will not count towards the 25. Neither will 20-year-old pair Curtis Jones and Neco Williams

Kaide Gordon, 16, could also feature at some point after impressing in pre-season.

Does Rafa Benitez have any tough decisions to make?

No. As things stand, Everton are bang on the 25-man squad limit.

Cenk Tosun continues his recovery from a second serious knee injury and won’t be fully fit for a couple of months.

Even when he does return, he’s likely to be surplus to requirements but will still be registered.

Meanwhile, James Rodriguez has been told he’s not in Rafa Benitez’s plans but will also likely be included.

Does Jurgen Klopp have any tough decisions to make?

No. In fact, Liverpool will be under 25 players when it comes to registering their squad.

That even includes Loris Karius, who hasn’t played for the Reds since his disastrous display in the 2018 Champions League final loss to Real Madrid.

Despite Divock Origi missing out on the past two match-day squads, he will be included along with other fringe players such as Phillips and Takumi Minamino.
