What’s On: Nine things to do in Liverpool this weekend - September 10-12

Here’s LiverpoolWorld’s guide to some intriguing events taking place across the city this weekend.

Positive Vibration Reggae Festival

What is it? Initially starting in 2016, the festival has quickly become a firm favourite for reggae lovers across the country, and has played host to some internationally renowned bands, genre legends and top selectors. The upcoming edition of the festival will feature names such as Benjamin Zephaniah, Don Letts, General Levy, Congo Natty and Gentleman’s Dub Club in what will be one of their biggest years so far.

When is it? Friday, 10 September to Saturday, 11 September.

A Creative Community

What is it? A brand new exhibition at the Bluecoat. A Creative Community is an exhibition that reflects the ‘unlocking of the creative process’, and provides an intimate and fascinating behind the scenes glimpse of this happening. The event tells the story of the artists and creatives that have used the studios at the Bluecoat through material drawn from the art centre’s extensive archive.

When is it? Friday, 10 September to Sunday, 31 October.

BTR Liverpool Skyline Half Marathon

What is it? More than 1,500 runners will take part in the half marathon through the streets of Liverpool on Sunday morning as they take in some of the city’s famous sites. Starting at 09.00 under the Liver Birds on Pier Head, the 13.1 mile event will take the athletes past landmarks such as Liverpool Cathedral, Royal Albert Dock, Sefton Park and the Museum Of Liverpool.

You don’t have to be running to enjoy it though, you can always cheer on the athletes from the sidelines and watch a man dressed in full hockey kit try and set a world record.

When is it? Sunday, 12 September.

Reminisce Festival

What is it? Reminisce is a one-day festival celebrating the best in classic dance music from back in the day. 120 global DJs and acts will feature across six big top arenas. The lineup includes Basshunter, N-Trance, Judge Jules, East 17 and Brandon Block.

When is it? Saturday, 11 September.

The Liverpool Theatre Festival

What is it? It’s your last chance to catch the Liverpool Theatre Festival at the Bombed Out Church. The outdoor live event comes to a close with an exciting lineup including Laughterhouse Comedy and Something About George – The George Harrison Story.

When is it? Friday, 3 September to Sunday, 12 September. Individual show details and tickets are available on liverpooltheatrefestival.com.

Bottomless Brunch at GPO Food Hall and Bar

What is it? GPO is Liverpool’s largest food hall and has proven very popular since opening in the Metquarter in the city centre earlier this year. There are eight different independent kitchens serving around 400 dishes ranging from Japanese to Mediterranean.

They are now offering a bottomless brunch for £25, which is available every day of the week. It last’s 90 minutes, with unlimited drinks - including beer, cocktails and Prosecco - and a meal from any of the vendors. You must note ‘bottomless brunch’ in your booking.

Lucian Freud: Real Lives - Tate Liverpool

What is it? Ahead of hosting the Turner prize next year, Tate Liverpool is hosting a major presentation of the work of Lucian Freud, the first opportunity of its kind in the North West in thirty years. Visitors to this exhibition will see paintings, etchings and photographs featuring the late British artist’s most recognised sitters including his first wife Kitty Garman.

It is a rare opportunity to see all of the Freud works in the Tate collection together.

When is it? Until 16 January 2022

Liverpool 8 Against Apartheid - Museum of Liverpool

What is it? The story of how Liverpool’s black community supported the anti-apartheid campaign in the 1980s. Nelson Mandela’s importance to the city is huge. In Toxteth, L8, he remains a highly significant role model to the community.

When is it? Until February 2024

AI: More than Human - World Museum

What is it? Elon Musk unveiled plans in August to produce a prototype humanoid artificial intelligence (AI) Tesla Bot next year. You can discover what the world of AI is all about at Liverpool World Museum’s special exhibition. It is full of interactivity, including a robot dog called Aibo and the video game 2065, as visitors are given a vision of the future. Free for children.

When is it? Until 31 October.
