The UEFA European Championship returns this week as the best 24 football teams from across the continent compete for the title. The group stage will kick off in Munich on Friday (June 14) with what is set to be a tense match between Germany and Scotland.

The championship will run until July 14, and Germany fans are hoping the squad will make it through to the grand final at their very own Olympiastadion in Berlin.
For many football fans, beer is a huge part of the Euros so, to find out which German drinks are a must for Germany fans, Emily and I visited Liverpool’s Albert’s Schloss to chat to manager, Lewis, and try some of his Bier suggestions for ourselves.
The Bold Street venue opened at the end of 2022 and has already become a must-visit destination for a hearty brunch, unique entertainment or a night out. Inspired by Alpine Europe, Albert’s Schloss - which translates to Albert’s Palace - pays tribute to Bavarian Prince Albert and has a drinks menu filled with proper German beer.

Proud holders of three European titles, Germany is one of the most successful teams in the European Championships. But, how does Albert’s Schloss manager Lewis think the squad will fare this year?
Speaking to LiverpoolWorld, the proud England supporter said: “I hope Germany get knocked out early but I think they’ve good depth in their squad so they’ll probably make the finals, or at least the semi-finals.”

Hide AdOffering six authentic German beers - and delicious food such as Bratwursts or pretzels - there is ample choice. But, which beverages are the stars? According to Lewis, the top three beers are Erdinger, Paulaner and Schofferhoffer, with each having slightly different notes and alcohol content. He added: “Paulaner is probably my favourite one, it’s one of the biggest beer houses in Germany and for Oktoberfest they have the biggest tent. I think that’s probably the best you can go for.” Trusting his recommendations, we tried all three to see which one we liked the most.
Liverpool fans will disappointed to hear that Emily and I had never tried Erdinger before (sorry, Jurgen Klopp) and, as the strongest of the three at 5.3%, we were both a little nervous to give it a try. While Emily didn’t have much to say other than that is was ‘beery’, I actually really enjoyed it - and might have finished it off post-filming.
Out of all three beers we both enjoyed the Schofferhoffer the most and while it’s already a staple of Emily’s summer shopping list, I would definitely drink it again. Fruity, slightly pink and not too strong, what more could non-beer drinking girls want?

Hide AdWhile Albert’s Schloss won’t be hosting any special events in honour of the Euros, it’s a great shout for pre or post-match drinks. If (like me and Emily) you’re not a huge beer drinker but want to get in the German spirit, the team are fully equipped to provide drinks recommendations. The atmosphere is brilliant and the smartly-dressed, friendly staff do pour a pretty great pint. For soaking up the alcohol, why not try some proper Bavarian food whilst you’re there too? Prost!
