I was challenged with finding a filling lunch in Liverpool city centre for less than £10 - without buying a supermarket meal deal.

Money is tight for most of us at the moment and finding a decent meal on a budget can be difficult - especially when you’re out and about and don’t have the option to make beans on toast at home.

As a remote worker, days where I have a busy schedule can be particularly tricky as I might not be in one place for long and often buy a coffee or lunch for convenience and somewhere to sit and work for a short while, and the cost can quickly build up.

As we all know, the cost of living crisis is hitting local businesses particularly hard and as many of us are on a tighter budget, it can be tempting to grab a quick lunch at Greggs or a supermarket meal deal rather than paying a little extra.

Determined to better support and champion our independent businesses, I’m on a mission to find high-quality, budget-friendly options for eating out in Liverpool. Challenged with finding a filling, nutritious lunch for less than £10, I stumbled across Chop! Chop! on Fenwick Street and just had to give it a try.

The small Korean eatery is right near Water Street and Castle Street, and I initially walked past it and then turned back around after seeing large queues outside. The menu is huge, with options ranging from katsu chicken and tofu curry, to ramen and popcorn chicken. I opted for the Tofu Mega, which consisted of lightly fried tofu in mega sauce and fried vegetables over rice.

Meals are actually cheaper at dinnertime versus teatime, so the huge portion only cost £7.60. Paying under £9 in total for my meal and a drink, I waited less than five minutes for my lunch to be made and decided to walk over to Chavasse Park to eat it. There are a few tables inside and outside Chop! Chop!, however, it was getting pretty packed in there at around midday.

Eating my meal outside with huge seagulls around me wasn’t my brightest idea, but the Tofu Mega was well worth the fear, packed with flavour and absolutely delicious. For a decent meal on a budget, Chop! Chop! is a must-visit, especially if you’ve got a busy schedule and want some filling food that is prepared fresh and promptly.
