Liverpool airport agrees deal with Lufthansa to open up 150 routes from Europe

Travellers will be able to fly directly from Liverpool to Frankfurt from May 2022 after Liverpool John Lennon airport agreed a new deal with German airline Lufthansa.

Why is it important?

The route will allow passengers from Liverpool to connect to over 150 destinations in Europe, Asia, Middle East, Africa and the Americas via Frankfurt.

Liverpool Chamber of Commerce said it will be good for the local economy, business and investment opportunities.

It will be the first time in its 66-year history in Britain that Lufthansa will take off from Liverpool.

What has been said?

Steve Rotheram, Mayor of the Liverpool City Region said: “Our area is an international destination of choice renowned for our unique blend of sport, culture, music and heritage. Today’s announcement is fantastic news that will give us much better connections to Europe and beyond, whether for tourism or business.

“Only last week, I met with Andreas Michaelis, the German Ambassador to discuss how we can strengthen the links between our region and Germany. From our twinned towns and cities, cultural ties stretching from The Beatles to Jürgen Klopp and centuries of trading relationships, we have strong foundations to build on.”

When are the flights?

Operations start on 4 May, 2022, with four weekly connections:-

Every Wednesday (Airbus A320) and Sunday (Bombardier CRJ900):
