Liverpool Lime Street among worst major train stations for cancellations

Liverpool Lime Street is one of Britain's busiest stations facing the most train cancellations.

According to National Rail figures analysed by train data website On Time Trains, the North West of England saw the highest rate of cancelled services across Britain in 2024, with 611,047 cancellations - 6.5% of all its services.

The data refers to cancellations between January and November, and reveals that Manchester Victoria has been the worst-hit of Britain’s busiest stations for cancellations in 2024 so far, with 9.5% of all scheduled stops cancelled.

Three of the top five worst major stations for cancellations were in Manchester, with Oxford Road seeing 8.1% cancelled and 6.7% of all scheduled stops cancelled at Manchester Piccadilly.

Liverpool Lime Street had the 11th highest cancellation rate of the busiest stations in Britain, with 12,062 trains cancelled - 5.9% of services. It ranked seventh worst in the North West, while Liverpool Central and Moorfields saw fewer cancellations than the national average of 3.8%, coming at 3.2% and 3.0% respectively.

Out of the ten busiest North West stations, Preston ranked the worst with 10.1% of services cancelled.

Rail Delivery Group, which represents National Rail and train operators, told the BBC that cancellations could be caused by weather, industrial action, trespass and track, train or signalling faults.

A Department for Transport spokesperson said: "Passengers are being let down by poor services, which is why we are committed to delivering the biggest overhaul of the railways in a generation."
