Storm Eunice has made its way to the UK as the Met Office issues an amber ‘danger to life’ warning for Liverpool on Friday 18 February.

The weather warning was initially yellow, but has been upgraded as the potential impact of the storm has become clearer.

The Met Office has said that “extremely strong winds” are expected, with gales of around 67mph set to batter Liverpool.

Storm Eunice is the second storm to arrive in Merseyside this week, replacing Storm Dudley which has caused disruption in the north of the country this week.

Storm Dudley caused a number of power outages, travel issues and damage to property.

However, Storm Eunice is set to be far more powerful, bringing stronger gales and potentially some snow to various areas of the United Kingdom.

But how will Storm Eunice affect Liverpool?

The Met Office’s amber weather warning comes into force in Liverpool from 3am on Friday morning.

It is set to last until 9pm on Friday evening, with warnings that Storm Eunice could cause “significant disruption”.

What are the Met Office warnings for Storm Eunice?

The Met Office has warned residents across the north west of England about the potential dangers caused by Storm Eunice.

People in the more at-risk areas for flooding and winds are being told to stay away from coastal areas, shoreline roads and paths, along with piers and promenades.

People are advised to expect the following:

  • Flying debris that could be a danger to life
  • Damage to homes and buildings
  • Roads, bridges and railway lines likely to close
  • Good chance of power cuts
  • Large waves and beach material causing disruption near the coast
  • Falling branches and trees

The amber weather warning covers the whole of Merseyside and the North West.

Storm Eunice is set to cause floods in and around the city, as well as potential energy supply problems.

How is Storm Eunice set to unfold?

On Friday, 18 February, Storm Eunice is expected to bring very strong winds with rain and snow, according to the Met Office. Snow showers may die down later in the day as the storm starts to clear. Temperatures will reach a maximum of 8 °C.

This is how the storm will unfold:

  • 3.00am - Pouring rain and and winds reaching around 21mph with gusts of 33mph. Gales will grow stronger throughout the morning heading towards the early afternoon.
  • 12.00pm - Winds grow stronger with sustained speeds of 41mph and gusts of 67mph. Winds will begin to die down heading towards the end of the day.
  • 9.00pm - Gales decrease to around 31mph sustained speeds with 51mph gusts - also a chance for hill snow in Liverpool around this time in the evening

After the weather warning ends in Liverpool, miserable weather will continue on into the weekend.

Saturday and Sunday will see strong winds continue, along with heavy rain and even some sleet and hill snow, but these unsettled conditions are not expected to persist into next week.
