The 30-year-old would be available for a nominal fee as his contract expires in the summer.

Everton’s issues regarding the quality and depth of the squad have been laid bare during an eight-game winless streak that finally came to end with a 2-1 win over Arsenal on Monday night.

With main striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin sidelined since August and a litany of further injury issues ravaging the team, manager Rafael Benitez is ready to hit the transfer market.

And the former Inter Milan and Napoli manager is looking to dip back into Serie A during the January transfer window to bolster his options.

Uruguay international Matias Vecino is the target and the Toffees have already made enquiries to Benitez’s old club Internazionale about the midfielder’s availability, according to Sports Witness.

What do we know about Matias Vecino?

The 30-year-old has been at Inter Milan since 2017 but his contract expires in the summer and he appears to be agitating for a winter transfer.

He was part of Antonio Conte’s side that won the Serie A title last season but found his first-team chances limited following a knee injury.

Things have not really improved under new boss Simone Inzaghi as the Scudetto-winner has made just one start in his 11 league appearances this season.

The central midfielder has played 118 times for the Nerazzurri over the course of his career, scoring 13 goals and providing seven assists.

Prior to joining Inter, Vecino spent time at Empoli, Cagliari and Fiorentina.

How likely is the deal?

Vecino’s agent, Alessandro Lucci, is certainly looking to move his player away from the San Siro and is “trying to understand the conditions for a farewell” during the January transfer window.

Inter are not opposed to a deal, which could see them net a nominal fee for a player who is out of contract in the summer.

Everton were linked with Vecino in the past but there is also interest from Napoli and an unnamed Spanish club.
