Everton’s injury troubles seemingly continue as midfielder pictured wearing knee brace ahead of Man City trip

Everton's midfield woes appear to have worsened ahead of Sunday's trip to Premier League champions Manchester City.

Tom Davies looks a doubt for the clash at the Etihad Stadium, adding to Rafa Benitez's problems in the engine room.

What's happened?

On Twitter, @EGTVEgal posed for a photo with the Goodison Park academy product in a London train station during the international break.

In the picture (click below image to view in full), Davies can be seen wearing a brace on his right knee and holding crutches.

The 23-year-old came off the bench in Everton's goalless draw with Tottenham before the hiatus of the season. He appeared to end the game unscathed, meaning he could have picked up the setback in training.

Davies has played seven times for the Toffees this season, scoring one goal.

What does it mean for Everton?

It's unlikely that Davies would have started the visit to Man City.

Fabian Delph impressed on his return to the starting line-up following a shoulder injury against Spurs following his eye-catching substitute cameo in the 2-1 loss at Wolves.

Meanwhile, Allan has started every league game so far this season.

However, it leaves Benitez short in terms of options from the bench in midfield.

The Blues are already without the talismanic Abdoulaye Doucoure. The Frenchman is sidelined with a foot injury, having recorded two goals and four assists in nine games this term.

Andre Gomes has been absent for the past six games with a calf issue. he has been back in full training over the international break but might not be ready to start at City.

Everton's only other fit senior centre-midfielder is Jean-Philippe Gbamin. However, his display at Wolves left a lot to be desired and he was withdrawn at the interval.

The Toffees also have striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin (quad) and centre-back Yerry Mina (hamstring) unavailable, while Mason Holgate will serve a three-match suspension after his sending off against Tottenham.

Could anyone from the under-23s step up?

Tyler Onyango is the likeliest candidate.

The 18-year-old made his Everton debut against Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup last season.

After recovering from a serious ankle injury, Onyango has played four times for the under-23s and once for an under-21 side in a 1-0 loss to Hartlepool in the Papa John's Trophy.

Following Everton's disastrous 5-2 loss to Watford in October, The Athletic reported that Benitez was ‘increasingly minded’ to involve Onyango as a deputy for Doucoure.
