Everton’s relegation rivals Newcastle United have made a January deadline day swoop for Matt Targett.

The former Southampton defender has joined the Magpies on loan for the rest of the season.

Targett was rendered surplus to requirements by Steven Gerrard and moves to Newcastle in their battle to retain their top-flight status.

He was allowed to leave the midlands outfit after they signed Lucas Digne from Everton earlier this month.

The France international, who was a fans’ favourite at Goodison Park, lAston Villa move after Chelsea interest">eft the Toffees on January 13 for £25 million.

His departure came after a falling out with ex-boss Rafa Benitez - who was sacked only five days later.

Benitez oversaw a woeful run of just one win in 13 league matches, with Everton now languishing 16th in the table and teetering over the drop zone.

Eddie Howe’s side are two places and four points below, with the Blues having a game in hand.

The two sides will do battle when Everton travel to Newcastle on Tuesday 8 February.

And Newcastle could also have recently-recruited Targett lining up against the visitors.
