Gary Lineker, Micah Richards and Alan Shearer all debated the latest comments from former Everton midfielder Lee Carsley as England’s international break came to an end.
Despite a strong start against Finland and Ireland in September, the defeat against Greece was a real blow for the ex-U21 boss. A win against Finland helped them to bounce back to winning ways but the comments he made after the defeat against Greece were certainly up for interpretation.

In recent days, we’ve had reports from the Times over Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola potentially being approached over the role when his contract expires with City at the end of the season - as well as reports with Thomas Tuchel. “He’s obviously a very good coach,” said Richards. “He’s always trying new things and you have to, what’s the point of playing the same way so I enjoy the fact he’s trying something new. He gets one bad result and suddenly, everyone turns on him.”
“Well, he turned on himself really”, joked Lineker, referring to the U21s line. “I just wonder whether he knows something about what’s happening in terms of looking for a new manager. They’ve sounded out managers, that’s what rumours are that’s we’ve heard, perhaps he’s protecting himself for wanting to get his old job back. He sounds kind of defeatist. I wonder whether they’ve been sounding out managers and he doesn’t believe he is going to get the job.”
