Steven Gerrard has admitted "there is no smoke without fire" when asked about Aston Villa's interest in Everton defender Lucas Digne.

The left-back is poised to depart Goodison Park during the January transfer window.

Toffees manager Rafa Benitez confirmed that Digne has asked to leave the club last week. It comes after the pair had an off-field dispute over tactics in December.

Villa appear to be the frontrunners for the France international, who was left on Merseyside for Everton's 3-2 victory at Hull City in the FA Cup on Saturday.

Gerrard's side lost 1-0 to Manchester United in the FA Cup last night.

He was asked about being linked with Digne at the full-time whistle - and did not deny his interest.

“We are working hard on targets,” said Gerrard.

“It is not respectful to mention any names but there is no smoke without fire and we want to try and improve certain areas of our team and our squad.”
