Hughes made 22 appearances for the Toffees’ under-23s last campaign, registering five goals and two assists.

However, the midfielder was let go at the end of his Goodison Park contract - and has now linked-up with Wirral-based Tranmere, the club has confirmed.

A statement on Rovers’ website said: “Tranmere Rovers are delighted to confirm that Rhys Hughes, Ryan Stratulis and Jack Williams have all signed contracts with the club.

“Hughes signs for the club after featuring regularly for Everton under-23s in the Premier League 2 last season where he chipped in with five goals and two assists in 22 games.

“Having graduated from the under-18s at Everton and regularly captaining the side, the midfielder is a regular in the Wales under-21 team and signs a two year deal at Prenton Park.”
