Cannavaro’s emergence has come as somewhat as a surprise to supporters.

Background

The former centre-back enjoyed an immense playing career.

He captained Italy to World Cub glory in 2006 and won the Ballon d’Or the same year.

Cannavaro also helped Real Madrid to back-to-back La Liga titles in 2007 and 2008.

After hanging up his boots, the Neapolitan moved into management.

He’s spent the majority of his time in China, having had two spells with Guangzhou Evergrande - and led them to the Chinese Super League title in 2019.

Cannavaro also was in charge of Tianjin Quanjian and Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr.

Everton’s interest

Now the 48-year-old look to take his career to Europe.

The Telegraph reports that Cannavaro ‘impressed in initial talks on Wednesday’.

Wayne Rooney and Frank Lampard are also being considered for the role after Benitez was axed on Sunday.

Roberto Martinez was in the reckoning but he won’t leave his post as Belgium boss with the World Cup taking place at the end of the year in Qatar.

Duncan Ferguson is currently holding the reins in a caretaker capacity.

Poland snub

It was reported earlier this month that Cannavaro was interested in the vacant role to become Poland’s national team chief.

Goal claimed that he turned down the job as he did not have enough time to prepare the country for their World Cup qualifiers in March.

A move to the Premier League is said to appeal to Cannavaro, though, with his daughter living in London.
