The Premier League reportedly want Everton to be hit with a significant punishment if guilty of breaking financial rules.

Jamie Carragher has leapt to the defence of Everton amid reports they're set for a points deduction for breaking Premier League financial rules - and queried why there hasn't been any recent noise made about Manchester City's breaches.

Everton were charged with breaking profit and sustainability rules in the 2021-22 season. An independent panel is currently reviewing the case and The Telegraph reports that the Toffees could be hit with a 12-point deduction if indeed found guilty. That could potentially relegate Sean Dyche's side, who have narrowly secured survival in the past two seasons.

In May, Man City were charged with more than 100 breaches of Premier League rules. And Liverpool legend Carragher has quipped on Twitter that City will be demoted by four divisions if the Premier League 'get their way'.

He posted on X: “The PL want a 12 point deduction for Everton for one charge. Man City are going to end up in the National League North if the PL get their way!!

“Unbelievable the amount of stories that come out about Everton’s situation, but Man City’s, which has 114 more charges & has gone on for much longer, has gone very quiet
