Everton have approached the Gunners about signing Maitland-Niles on a season-long loan with the option to buy next summer.

After the two clubs held initial talks, Arsenal have reportedly decided they want to keep the 23-year-old at the Emirates following a lacklustre start to the campaign by the club.

They’ve lost their opening three Premier League matches, with the latest a 5-0 drubbing at Manchester City last Saturday.

Arsenal’s stance has resulted in Maitland-Niles making his frustrations clear about not being allowed to leave.

Background

Everton boss Rafa Benitez is keen to bring Maitland-Niles to Goodison Park as he finalises his summer recruitment drive.

The former Ipswich loanee is a versatile performer who’s capable of playing in right-back and central-midfield roles.

A right-sided full-back is something that Everton require to provide cover and competition for captain Seamus Coleman before the window shuts.

Maitland-Niles spent the second half of last season on loan at West Brom where he impressed.

He made 12 appearances but could not prevent the Baggies from suffering relegation from the Premier League.

Since returning to the Emirates, however, Maitland-Niles has been down the pecking order despite the Gunners' woeful opening to the term.

He made his first league appearance off the bench in the sobering defeat at Manchester City.
