Euro 2024: Liverpool star set to break European Championship captain record

Liverpool’s Dominik Szoboszlai is set to break a European Championship record at Euro 2024 when Hungary face Switzerland this weekend.
The Hungary captain is set to lead his side across the tournament in a group that also features Germany and Scotland and they enter having lost just once since 2022. Szoboszlai made his debut in 2019 and has captained the side for two and a half years, netting 12 times in 42 appearances.

Hide AdSzoboszlai will become the youngest captain in UEFA European Championship history if he leads Hungary out for their opening group match, which is a stark contrast from having missed the last tournament in 2021. He enters the tournament after a strong debut season in England for Liverpool where he established himself as a key figure at Anfield. He managed seven goals and four assists in 45 appearances and it’s clear he will only get better as he is still only 23 years old.
Speaking to the official UEFA website ahead of Euro 2024, the midfielder claimed he has already spoken to teammate Andy Robertson ahead of their group clash as he reiterated how important it is to make a good start against Switzerland. “It's important for every team [to make a good start]. Switzerland will also be thinking that a good start would help them a lot. We'll see who wants it more.
“I've seen the Germany squad. I think it's a very good squad. Some of my team-mates were also selected and Nagelsmann is my former coach. It will be a good match – I can't wait. I hope [the match against Scotland] won't be crucial. We will be out to prove to everyone that we have some tricks up our sleeve. If it's crucial, then we will have the right mentality. I talked to Robbo [Liverpool team-mate Andrew Robertson], but I don't want to give out any details.”
Hungary lost recently to Ireland in a friendly but they had been unbeaten since November 2022. Across that time, they managed a 14-game streak across their European qualification and friendlies beating the likes of Greece, Serbia (twice) and Turkey. They sit 26th in the world rankings and Szoboszlai will be instrumental to their potential success which begins against Switzerland.
