Fabrizio Romano drops update on 'fantastic' Liverpool target with ten clubs interested in him

Following their defensive injury concerns, Liverpool have been assessing their options on the transfer market for new recruits. The Reds are looking to bolster their ranks as they find themselves challenging for the Premier League title and in good stead in the Europa League, FA Cup, and Carabao Cup as well.

Despite losing both Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas, the Reds have mostly been linked to centre-backs since last summer.

Now their midfield restructure is almost complete, Liverpool can focus on other areas of their squad. The situation with Joël Matip could well determine the level of defensive recruitment this year, as the 32-year-old is due to be out of contract in June. After suffering an ACL injury in December, the question surfaced over whether he had played his last game for Liverpool.

Football Insider recently reported that Jurgen Klopp wants to offer Matip a new deal but the outcome of Liverpool's summer recruitment is unlikely to depend on whether he extends his stay at Anfield or not.

Last week, it was reported that Liverpool are monitoring Sporting CP’s Ousmane Diomande, who joined the Portuguese side only a year ago. The 20-year-old is attracting a lot of attention, having established himself as a key player at the club, but it appears that the Reds are still quite far away from agreeing any sort of deal for the in demand centre-back.

Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on Liverpool's interest in Diomande and has played down the recent links to his rumoured exit.

Speaking to CaughtOffside for his latest Daily Briefing column, the transfer guru said: "Diomande is a fantastic centre-back, he can be an excellent addition for any club. But, despite links with Liverpool, I’m not aware of movement around Diomande now, honestly."

Romano also revealed that Diomande has been linked with a whopping ten clubs as things stand, but 'nothing concrete' has been delivered to Sporting's table so far.
