The return of Cristiano Ronaldo to Manchester United unsurprisingly attracted long, meandering queues outside Old Trafford.

Red Devils supporters were desperate to get their hands on the 2021-22 season shirt with CR7 adorning the back to mark the Portuguese’s homecoming after his departure to Real Madrid 12 years ago.

However, despite the excitement at the other end of the M62, United jersey sales were still not as popular as Liverpool’s.

That is according to research conducted by mobilewins.co.uk, anyway, who scored Premier League’s participating teams on their home, away, third and goalkeeping offerings across the past five campaigns.

It was the Reds’ home strip for this season that came out top of the pile by a wide margin.

When it came to search volume and site traffic, Liverpool’s kit racked up a total score of 1,124,352. That was almost double United’s tally of 580,771.

It is estimated that the club’s online store attracted 3.2 million organic visits all checking hands how to get their hands on the strip.

It went on sale on 3 June and pays homage to when the Reds launched a full red kit for the first time in their history in 1964.

United’s came second on the list, with Chelsea’s jersey for this campaign third. That may have something to do with Romelu Lukaku’s return to Stamford Bridge, having been purchased for £97.5 million from Inter Milan.

Liverpool’s cream away kit for this season came out sixth on the list, with their yellow third strip down the standings in 15th.

It is always one of the most heated battles of the season.

The Reds travel to Old Trafford on Sunday 24 October before welcoming their rivals to Anfield on Saturday 19 March.
