Former Liverpool players Emile Heskey and Steve McManaman both agreed with Brendan Rodgers that Leicester City’s win over the Reds was nothing short of ‘heroic’.

Leicester’s season has been hampered by injuries. Problems for Caglar Soyuncu and Jonny Evans meant that Leicester had to field a makeshift centre-back duo, and called upon defensive midfielder Wilfred Ndidi and right-back Daniel Amartey to slot in to centre-backs.

Leicester won the game courtesy of a 59th minute strike from Ademola Lookman, and then put in a vintage defensive display to secure all three points, and put a serious dent in Liverpool’s title hopes.

Midfield maestro Youri Tielemans was only fit enough to be named on the subs bench, whilst Hamza Choudhury, Luke Thomas and Kiernan Dewsbury Hall - all academy graduates - started.

Speaking on the Premier League Productions’ global coverage, Heskey said: “100%. Yeah, definitely a heroic win.

“When you’re coming off a result against Man City and they’re running away with league at this moment in time, and you’ve got some young players playing against some very experienced players and they go and perform like they did there, players playing out of position, players coming back from COVID having one training session and then going on playing two games back to back.”

McManaman also gave his views, and focused on some individual performances. He said: “Definitely a heroic performance from them tonight.

“I can’t remember him (Mohamed Salah) going past Thomas a lot of times, he was nice and tight to him, he was really aggressive with him, wasn’t he? Always on him.

“Dewsbury-Hall came back, who’s a bit of a playmaker himself, but he did the dirty work tonight. He got back, he put himself in front of every shot, and he helped his mate out, which you have to do. You have to help your mate out.”
