Paul Scholes says one Manchester United player would get into Liverpool team ‘all day long’ - not Ronaldo

The former Red Devils midfielder made the claim after their 4-2 win against Leeds, who Liverpool play tonight, but Reds legend Steve McManaman disagrees.

Paul Scholes has claimed that Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba is the only player at his former side that could get into the Liverpool team.

Pogba impressed on Sunday in his side’s win at Elland Road and has been an important player since his return from a thigh injury at the start of February.

And speaking after their 4-2 win at Leeds United at the weekend, Scholes suggested the Frenchman could make Premier League rivals Liverpool or Manchester City sides ‘in his best form’.

“Pogba in his best form would (get into Liverpool’s team),” Scholes told Premier League Productions.

“He is indicative of what the club are doing. Every player is inconsistent. People running the club are inconsistent in what they are doing.

“I have been a big critic of Paul, but if you are an opposing player going to Old Trafford and you are playing against Fred and McTominay ‘all day long’.

“Now, you don’t know what you are going to get with Paul. But when he is on his game, he is brilliant.

“But when he isn’t, then against your Liverpool and Man City’s, you might struggle in them areas. Where do Man United go next year to replace him?”

McManaman would be ‘shocked’ with PL move

Former Liverpool midfielder Steve McManaman has responded to Scholes’ claims, saying he would be ‘incredibly shocked’ if Pogba were to move to a Premier League rival.

And the ex-Red went on to claim that Pogba has not been good enough since returning to Old Trafford to warrant a move to a top Premier League side.

Speaking to HorseRacing.net, McManaman said: “If Paul Pogba was to make a move to one of Manchester United’s Premier League rivals, I wouldn’t be shocked…. I would be incredibly shocked!

“If it was Manchester City, Chelsea, or Liverpool I would be amazed, far more than shocked. Why would you?

“Is Paul Pogba going to improve Manchester City’s team? No. He wouldn’t improve Liverpool’s either. Probably not Chelsea’s, the way they play.

“Paul Pogba’s form for Manchester United over the past five years hasn’t been good enough to reflect that he can go and play for Manchester City or Liverpool.

“His reputation is excellent, of course it is. But his reputation is in the France shirt and Juventus shirt.

“It’s not in the Manchester United shirt. His style of play is too slow for Man City or Liverpool.”

Pogba set to leave in summer

Contract negotiations have been a hot-topic regarding Pogba for some time now, but it seems this time round Manchester United are preparing for his departure in the summer.

The 28-year-old has been pivotal since returning at the beginning of February and will hope to pick up consistent minutes after an injury-disrupted season - even if just to put himself in the shop window.

Links to fellow Premier League clubs have been tenuous and a move abroad - to either PSG or Real Madrid - looks a more likely option.

There will be plenty of interest, however, with the quality of the Frenchman evident in some of his performances this season and the fact that he is a free transfer - factoring out the huge wage demands.
