Smith said: "We've had some bad news about Adam. He went in for an arthroscopy and then for a meniscus repair, he should be out for the season now.
"It's a real blow and disappointing but it gives other players an opportunity now.
"It was in the game when he did it. He planted his foot and hurt his ankle and knee but played on. He felt a bit stiff on the following two days, and reported it to the medical staff."

Tim Krul (shoulder), Lukas Rupp (thigh) and Andrew Omobamidele (back) are all unavailable.
However, there is a chance that former Liverpool defender Ozan Kabak could start for the visitors.
Kabak, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Anfield from Schalke, missed last week’s 4-0 loss to Manchester City. through illness.
Kabak and Mathias Normann were involved in a training-ground game against Nottingham Forest on Tuesday, though, and are in contention.
