The Reds took to their social media accounts to wish the former England defender a happy birthday - and Carragher responded with a request that will delight the club’s supporters.

With speculation continuing to intensify over a possible move for highly-rated Porto forward Luis Diaz, Carragher has asked his former club to complete a move for the Colombian on his special day.

In reply to the club tweet, the Sky Sports pundit said: “Luis Diaz would be a lovely birthday present if you can get it done before the day's out.”

Premier League rivals Spurs looked to be in the driving seat to complete a move for Diaz ahead of Monday’s transfer deadline and the North London club were willing to pay around £46 million to secure his services.

However, Diaz is believed to be interested in a move to Anfield and Sky Sports are reporting an initial offer of £37million will be made in the coming hours.

That fee could be increased by a series of bonuses if Diaz becomes a success on Merseyside.

The Reds are believed to have dispatched a delegation to Argentina - where Diaz is currently on international duty with Colombia - in order to finalise any potential deal ahead of Monday’s 11pm deadline.

Diaz has caught the eye of current and former Porto team-mates during his time with the Portuguese giants.

Former Porto forward and fellow Colombian international Jackson Martinez said: “He is an impressive player, very hardworking, with great skills, has a goal, can assist and has impressive physical ability.

“He is in his prime and must take advantage of it.

“If this continues, it will be difficult to stay at FC Porto. someone will pay the clause easily”.

Current Porto star Pepe also lauded the forward, saying: “Luis Díaz is the example of the professionalism and passion we have in playing for FC Porto, we know of the importance of wearing this shirt, and I am proud to share the locker room with Luis Díaz and others.”

Negotiations are believed to be ongoing and a deal seems highly unlikely to be completed before deadline day meaning Carragher may have to accept a belated birthday present.
