While one school in South Liverpool is celebrating its first ever ‘good’ Ofsted rating, after consistently being ranked as ‘requires improvement’, there are a number of others that are yet to follow suit.
The Academy of St Nicholas, on Horrocks Avenue, was rated as ‘good’ in all four key judgement areas, which include: quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development and leadership and management.
St Francis Xavier’s College was rated ‘requires improvement’ in its latest report in October 2021. The Ofsted report reads: “Pupils appreciate the extensive range of extra-curricular activities and clubs on offer,
such as chess, music technology and badminton. They spoke positively about the
‘Humanutopia’ programme which promotes their mental health and well-being.
Pupils, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND),
have not achieved well over time. This is partly because of the negative impact of
turbulence in senior leadership. However, leaders’ recent actions are helping to
improve the quality of education that pupils receive.”
6. Gateacre School
Gateacre School was rated ‘requires improvement’ in its latest report in March 2020. The Ofsted report states: “Pupils and students behave well in class. They try hard in lessons. They move
around school sensibly and they arrive at their lessons on time. Pupils wear their
uniforms with pride.
Pupils are learning more across the curriculum. This is because teachers have raised
their expectations of what pupils can achieve academically. Pupils are achieving
higher standards in their GCSE examinations than other pupils in the past. That said,
pupils’ achievement overall is still not good enough.”
7. St Michael's Catholic Primary School
St Michael’s Catholic Primary School was rated ‘requires improvement’ in its latest report in February 2020. The Ofsted report reads: “Leaders are ambitious for the pupils and want them to do well. They work closely
with parents and carers, who told us how pleased they are with the school.
Pupils do not always learn as well as they should in some subjects. Pupils’
attainment in reading has not been as high as it could be. Leaders are taking action
to improve this situation.”
8. Hunts Cross Primary School
Hunts Cross Primary School was rated ‘requires improvement’ in its latest report in October 2019. The Ofsted report states: “Leaders expect pupils to do as well as pupils in other schools. They know that pupils
do not achieve as well as they should, especially at the end of key stage two.
Leaders have focused on reading and mathematics because they know how
important these areas are. Other areas of the curriculum are at an early stage of
development.
Children in the early years do not do as well as they could. This is because teachers
do not use what they know about the children well enough to get their learning off
to a brisk start.”
