German airline Lufthansa has announced that it will open up a connection between the city and Frankfurt, starting 4 May, 2022.

Why it matters: Transferring passengers from Liverpool can connect through Frankfurt to over 150 destinations in Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Africa and the Americas.

The announcement comes after a difficult time for the aviation industry, following the introduction of international travel restrictions designed to protect public health and prevent the spread of COVID-19.

What’s been said

CEO of Liverpool John Lennon Airport, John Irving, said: "We've gone through some very tough times like many other businesses have. The uncertainty with the restrictions and that confidence that's the most important thing, and we've been trying to rebuild that.

“We had a consistent three or four months when we weren't back anywhere near normal levels, but people were flying and getting back to normality. Those that wanted and needed to were flying, and that's a really good sign."
