Santander announces 44 bank closures as Merseyside branch to shut - here's when

Santander has announced plans to close 44 bank branches in a major shake-up that places 291 jobs at risk.

The news comes after the banking giant confirmed it was closing 95 branches last year, pointing to “changing customer behaviour” as the reason behind the changes.

After the scheduled closures, the Santander network will feature 305 branches - 244 of which will be full-service locations.

In Merseyside, Santander plans to close its Heswall branch on Telegraph Road. The proposed closure date is May 13, 2026.

The Ormskirk bank will also close by the end of January 2027 but will be replaced with a banking hub.

Formby lost its last standing bank in August 2025, when Santander’s Chapel Lane branch closed its doors. The Santander bank in Kirkby was shut down in July 2025.

A spokesperson for Santander UK, said: “In response to a continuing and sizeable shift towards customers using digital banking, we are making changes to our branches to better support our customers.

“We will continue to invest in both our branch network - comprising of full-service branches, counter-free branches, reduced-hour branches, Santander Locals, and our increasingly popular Work Cafés – as well as our digital banking services, so we can be there to support our customers however they choose to bank with us.”
