Dominik Szoboszlai inspired Hungary to Nations League victory.

Dominik Szoboszlai played a talismanic role as he led Hungary to Nations League victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The Liverpool midfielder scored both goals in the 2-0 triumph last night. Szoboszlai, who operated on the left wing, broke the deadlock with a fine finish in the 38th minute. He then secured Hungary’s first Nations League A3 win when netting from the penalty spot in the 50th minute.

Having also netted a sublime free-kick in a 1-1 draw against the Netherlands last weekend, Szoboszlai will return to Anfield full of confidence. The former RB Leipzig man was dropped to the bench for the 1-0 win at Crystal Palace before the break, having started every other Premier League game, but came on at half-time for the injured Alexis Mac Allister.

Head coach Arne Slot has challenged Szoboszlai to add more goals and assists to his game in the No.10 role. That’s something that he delivered with Hungary, although it was his overall performance which Reds fans may take more encouragement given his somewhat inconsistent form in the formative stages of the season.

Not only did the 24-year-old fire a double but he was excellent throughout the encounter against Bosnia. He engineered two chances, completed four successful dribbles and made six passes into the final third.

Szoboszlai’s pressing and work-rate is a reason why he is highly regarded by Slot and that was on full display for his national team. In the Bosnia triumph, he recorded seven ball recoveries and won seven duels.

In addition, stats-based website WhoScored handed Szoboszlai a match rating of 7.7/10. Meanwhile, Sofascore were more impressed and handed him a rating of 9/10. On the win, he said via M4Sport: "This is who we are, we defend ourselves, we fight, we win duels, we are there for the other when needed. It was a very tough match, but I am happy for all the members of the team, Kornél Szűcs, who introduced himself, everyone is needed. We are progressing from match to match, and now the only goal was to crown the outstanding Dutch match with a victory, and we succeeded.”

Szoboszlai will now head back to Merseyside as Liverpool’s season recommences with a clash against Chelsea at Anfield on Sunday. The former Red Bull Salzburg midfielder has registered one goal and three assists in nine outings for the Reds so far this campaign.
