Wirral has a range of excellent primary and secondary schools, which have received ‘outstanding’ Ofsted reports. However, some schools in the region aren’t doing quite as well.
Birkenhead Park School was rated ‘requires improvement’ in November 2019. The Ofsted report states: “In the past, pupils at this school have not achieved well in their GCSE examinations. Since the last inspection, leaders have improved the quality of education that pupils receive. Staff have higher expectations of pupils. However, pupils do not benefit from an overall good quality of education. This is because there are still weaknesses in how well the curriculum is planned and delivered in some subjects."
10. St Mary’s Catholic College
St Mary’s Catholic College was rated ‘requires improvement’ in October 2019. The Ofsted report reads: “Pupils have positive relationships with each other and their teachers. Pupils behave well during breaktimes and lunchtimes. In lessons and around the school, most pupils follow instructions. They are typically respectful of each other and their teachers. Pupils who spoke with us said that they feel safe. They told us that bullying does not happen very often. If it does, they say that staff sort it out quickly. Leaders and staff ensure that pupils and sixth-form students are cared for well. Pupils enjoy taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme and a wide range of after-school activities, including sports and drama."
11. Woodchurch C of E Primary School
Woodchurch C of E Primary School was rated ‘requires improvement’ in October 2019. The Ofsted report states: “Most pupils enjoy attending school. They like the trips that support their learning and build their understanding of their local community, for example by singing at local nursing homes. They take part in a wide range of extra-curricular activities, especially sports. Pupils value the opportunities to take part in competitions and are justifiably proud of their successes. Pupils told us that behaviour in classrooms is not always good. Chatter and poor attitudes to learning from some pupils disrupt the learning of others. However, they also told us that behaviour is better at lunchtimes and breaktimes. They said that bullying is rare and, when it does happen, staff deal with it successfully. All pupils who spoke with us said that they feel safe at the school."
12. Manor Primary School
Manor Primary School was rated ‘requires improvement’ in October 2019. The Ofsted report states: “In mathematics and English, the school has plans for learning which make sure that pupils learn things in a logical order. These plans show teachers what pupils should know and remember at the end of each term. The plans for teaching reading from the start of Nursery show in detail the letters and sounds which pupils should be learning at each stage as they move through Reception, Year 1 and Year 2. In subjects such as science and geography, plans are very clear about which skills pupils should develop each year. However, they are not always specific enough about what pupils should know and remember. For some subjects, the headteacher and governors have not checked well enough that teachers plan learning in ways which build up knowledge gradually as pupils move up the school.”
