Family-run jewellers Wongs named Merseyside Independent Business of the Year 2024

A local treasure has been named Independent Business at the Year at the Merseyside Independent Business (MIB) Awards.

The annual accolades, which commenced in 2013, are designed to shine a light on the very best the region has to offer. The awards are broken down into a dozen categories, including Bar of the Year, Food Venue of the Year and Best Start-up Business, as well as the overall Merseyside Independent Business of the Year.

Wongs, a much-loved, family run jewellers where “Liverpool gets engaged” received the top award at a sparkling ceremony on October 17. Created 45 years ago by Brian Wong, the jewellery shop, which is located in the Whitechapel area of the city centre, is known for its hand-crafted diamond engagement rings.

As well as winning the overall award, the jewellers was also named Retailer of the Year with Director of Strategic Partnerships and Communications at Liverpool BID (the headline sponsor of the MIB Awards), Katie Bentley, noting that Wongs “encapsulated everything on the list for an amazing independent.”

“Their entry demonstrated excellent client care, approachability, engaging marketing campaigns and commitment to investment in the city region. Judges noted that the business in question has built a recognisable brand, while remaining local and offering its clients exceptional service,” she said.

Discussing the achievement, Peter Wong, Managing Director at Wongs, said: “Winning the overall Merseyside Independent Business of the Year is an incredible honour. It reflects not only our passion for what we do but also our commitment to the Liverpool community. We are grateful for the support of our customers and peers who have made this possible.”

Other winners include Hope Street Hotel, crowned Culture & Tourism Business of the Year, and the Arts Bar which bagged the Bar of the Year Award. Toxteth’s Squash was named Food Venue of the Year and Caring Connections was crowned Employer of the Year.
