Alexander Isak 'training in Spain' as as Liverpool 'reach agreement in principal
Alexander Isak transfer news as Liverpool remain keen on signing the Newcastle United striker.
Alexander Isak is reportedly undertaking individual work in Spain after being omitted from Newcastle United’s pre-season tour of Asia amid Liverpool’s interest.
Basque County-based newspaper El Diario Vasco has revealed that the striker has been spotted in Zubieta, where the training ground of his former club Real Sociedad is located. Isak has been working with a fitness trainer amid reports that he has not been at Newcastle’s training ground.
The Magpies claimed that the striker sustained a thigh injury ahead of their departure to Asia, but it was claimed by the Daily Mail that scans returned clear. Isak is wanted by Premier League champions Liverpool in the summer transfer window and it is said that he has a dream of moving to Anfield.
Sky Sports Germany has suggested that the Reds have already reached an agreement in principle with Isak for a contract until 2031.
The Sweden international fired 27 goals for Newcastle in the 2024-25 season. He helped the Magpies win their first major trophy for 70 years, scoring against Liverpool in a 2-1 Carabao Cup final win at Wembley, while Eddie Howe’s side finished fifth in the Premier League and qualified for the Champions League.
But Isak was said to have been irked that he was not offered a new contract at St James’ Park last season. That is despite having four years remaining on his current deal. The 25-year-old has reportedly demanded wages of £300,000 per week to pen fresh terms on Tyneside.
Sky Sports Germany has suggested that Isak’s deal agreed with Liverpool would be similar to that of Hugo Ekitike’s after he moved to Merseyside from Anfield for up to £79 million earlier this month.
But the Reds’ pursuit of Isak may depend on whether Newcastle can find a replacement. The Magpies have so far been fruitless in their attempt to sign a new centre-forward after missing out on Joao Pedro, Liam Delap and Ekitike.
Howe’s outfit are said to have RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko on their radar but Manchester United are also keen.
"He is still our player. He's contracted to us," Toon boss Howe said at a news conference in Seoul before a 1-0 pre-season friendly against a K-League XI. "We, to a degree, control what is next for him. I would love to believe all possibilities are still available to us. My wish is that he stays, but that's not in my full control. We have not received a formal offer for Alex, from any club."
