In 2019, Jurgen Klopp spoke to talkSPORT and swiftly rejected any idea that Liverpool would be able to sign Paris Saint-Germain and French superstar Kylian Mbappe.

“Ok, from a sporting point of view, there are not a lot of reasons to not sign him. What a player he is.

“But it is about the money of course. No chance, Absolutely no chance. Sorry for killing that story.”

The 23-year-old forward seemed on the edge of what would have been a huge deal worth around £137 million in the summer to join Los Blancos but the deal was rejected and the Parisian born star will almost inevitably leave PSG on a free transfer once his contract runs out at the end of the season.

Even after Real Madrid’s contract was rejected, rumours continued to mount that Mbappe would become a La Liga player.

However, the Spanish news outlet Sport reported that after Mbappe witnessed their playing first hand in Tuesday night’s Champions League match (15 February 2022) the Frenchman was left less than impressed and once again, rumours are swirling around suggesting that the young forward remains a point of interest for the Reds and that he himself would be open to conversations with Klopp.

What changed for Mbappe?

Mbappe scored in the 94th-minute, securing his team a 1-0 over the Spanish opponents but Real Madrid’s apparent ‘inferiority’ in the match has given the Frenchman second thoughts on a move to the famous Madrid stadium, Bernabeu.

The 23-year-old spoke in 2020 after Liverpool had lifted the Premier League for the first time since 1990: “This season, Liverpool have been a machine in the Premier League. They have made winning look easy but the truth is that it is never easy.

“Performances, like they have been having, don’t just happen. To be as ruthless as they have been would come from lots of hard work in training and from having a very good manager.”

Following Tuesday’s first Champions league leg, Anfield have once again come back into the limelight for Mbappe with Liverpool’s ‘sporting project’ and Klopp’s managerial prowess said to be an ‘attractive’ option for the forward.

How likely is a move from PSG to Liverpool for Mbappe?

Out of PSG, Real Madrid and Liverpool, Liverpool would most definitely sit last in the financial pecking order.

As Klopp previously stated, if it were just down to the talent and a question of sport, there would be no question Mbappe would be receiving offers from Anfield.

However it does not seem financially viable for the Reds.

Additionally, Mbappe’s last minute goal on Tuesday was once again scored from driving in from the left-hand side.

Liverpool have just signed Luis Diaz to play there and the Colombian has not disappointed in his new role at Anfield.

The 25-year-old signed a five year contract with Liverpool and if his recent performances are anything to go by, the Colombian will only improve.

Jurgen Klopp is highly unlikely to have had any plan on signing the Frenchman having made such a recent signing of a player who brings the same result to the game.
