Liverpool Airport

Liverpool John Lennon Airport is expecting over 160,000 passengers to pass through the terminal over the festive period. There's a lot of building work taking place, so they are asking passengers at peak periods to allow a little extra time to pass through compared to normal.

Trains

Merseyrail have released their special festive timetable to keep the city region moving over the Christmas and New Year Period. Trains will run every day except Christmas Day, with the Boxing Day service returning to support those attending events or heading out to indulge in retail therapy in the sales.

  • On Christmas Eve, services will run throughout the day, with the last trains departing around 8:30pm.
  • On Boxing Day, the service will run from approximately 9am to 6pm, with trains calling at selected stations across the network. Additional services will be available between Liverpool and Aintree to support those attending the Boxing Day races.
  • On New Year's Eve, services will operate as usual, with the last trains departing around 8pm.
  • On New Year's Day, a 30-minute Sunday service will run across all lines, helping customers kick off the New Year with ease.

Buses

Free bus services will operate around the Liverpool City Region on Christmas Day. The special services, funded by Merseytravel, will run on Christmas Day, covering most hospital routes across Liverpool, Sefton, St Helens, Knowsley, Wirral and Halton.

Running between approximately 12.00pm and 6.00pm, Stagecoach will operate services on a number of key routes; however, Arriva has confirmed that none of their bus services will run. Full details can be found in our article here.

Tunnels

Both Mersey Tunnels will also be toll-free from 10.00pm on Christmas Eve until 6.00am on Boxing Day. Full details here.

Mersey Ferries

There will be no commuter service running on the Mersey Ferries between Christmas Eve and Thursday, January 2. However, from Saturday, December 28 through to New Year's Eve, The River Explorer Cruise will run between 11am hourly until 3pm.

Shops

Bins

As we prepare for mounds of cardboard boxes from deliveries, wrapping paper and possibly a few more empty bottles than usual, it is important to keep track of the changes to bin collections.

In Liverpool, all bin collections will be moved back by between one and three days, with changes taking place from Christmas Day. Our full guide can be found here.
