Surprise Asda store to open in Liverpool's Baltic Triangle
Supermarket chain Asda looks set to open a new branch in Liverpool’s Baltic Triangle area… but it comes as a bit of a surprise. The proposed store on Parliament Street was not listed when Asda announced earlier this year it would seek to open 110 Express sites across the country, although three others in Merseyside were.
However, new documents show an application has been made to Liverpool City Council’s planning department for signage for its Express brand on a building on the corner of Parliament Square, opposite Boxpark.

A total of eight window vinyls and an information panel attached to the front door in the distinctive green tones associated with the company for decades.

An application form indicated the signs will be in situ for at least five years, giving an idea of the business’ long term plans for the Baltic Triangle. It would be the firm’s 10th store across the Liverpool city region, having already opened locations in Aigburth, Sefton Park, Huyton, Rainhill, Aintree, Hunts Cross, Breck Road, Stoneycroft and Walton.
Plans announced earlier this year included proposals for new stores in Dingle, Bootle and St Helens. The Baltic Triangle site would be the latest in the increasing number of Asda Express convenience store locations across the UK.
The chain said it hoped to open 500 by the end of 2024 having completed the acquisition of a number of former Co-op locations. A consultation has been concluded on Asda’s plans for the Baltic area, which was received by the city council on September 18.

A date has yet to be confirmed for the plans to go before planning officers for a final decision or opening for the proposed shop.
