Bayern Munich star who would join Liverpool is up for 'sale' this summer
The Bayern Munich star admires Liverpool and he could well be a strong candidate for a deal this summer.
Reports over recent days have opened up the possibility of Matthijs de Ligt moving to Liverpool as Bayern Munich are looking to sell him to raise funds.

Liverpool have already parted ways with Joel Matip after his deal expired which leaves them a defender short in the heart of defence. Joe Gomez’s resurgence as a versatile full-back casts some doubt over his future at centre-back as they have only have three senior centre-backs otherwise. Van Dijk is his closest match statistically on FBref and the two could be an unstoppable partnership.
De Ligt has been in the spotlight ever since captaining Ajax to the Champions League semi-finals at a young age and winning the Golden Boy award in 2018. Now aged 24, he is extremely experienced for his age and could be set for an exciting new chapter of his career after Sky Germany revealed that he is a candidate for sale, as Bayern look to raise revenue this summer by selling players.
It is claimed the Bundesliga club "want to save on his high salary" which could be an issue for any club wanting to sign him but he has only been linked to clubs that can afford such numbers. Previously, he was linked with a move to Anfield to join his national teammate Van Dijk and, in February, HITC claimed Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool were keeping tabs on him. Reports from Fabrizio Romano (via Caughtoffside) claim a centre-back is still the priority this summer and De Ligt may just become the highest profile defender available on the market. Granted, his time at Bayern across the past season has been much maligned as he had to battle with Dayot Upamecano, Kim Min-jae and even Eric Dier as they scrambled to save their season which, in the end, they failed to do. A fresh start for De Ligt could help him rediscover his top form as his potential remains extremely high.
As for Bayern, they finished trophy-less and the club find themselves in need of a bounce back but there is a lot of uncertainty over their squad. However, Euro 2024 will give De Ligt the opportunity to impress clubs as he lines up for the Netherlands, potentially next to Van Dijk.
