'Go and get' - Rio Ferdinand urges Man United to sign Liverpool target Arne Slot has 'held talks' with

Liverpool could well be in the market for a new right-back in the summer transfer window.

Rio Ferdinand has told Manchester United to try to sign a Liverpool transfer target.

The bitter rivals are in contrasting positions in the Premier League - but are set to have important summers. United languish in 13th place, with their woes continuing despite Ruben Amorim taking over as manager in November. They need more additions despite spending an estimated £1.5 billion in transfers since Sir Alex Ferguson left the Old Trafford hot seat in 2013.

Liverpool, on the other hand, are top of the table and set to move level on United by claiming their 20th English title. Yet recent results have underlined that there are areas of the squad that require bolstering. As things stand, it appears that the Reds will be in the market for a new right-back. Trent Alexander-Arnold is out of contract and he appears likely to complete a free transfer to Real Madrid.

That will leave Conor Bradley as the only recognised option at Anfield and competition will need to be brought in should Alexander-Arnold complete an exit. The player who Liverpool have been heavily linked with is Jeremie Frimpong. The 24-year-old helped Bayer Leverkusen to their maiden Bundesliga title last season as well as the DFB-Polkal. The only game Xabi Alonso’s side lost was against Atalanta in the Europa League final.

Reports have suggested that Slot has already held tentative negotiations with his Dutch compatriot Frimpong. However, with Man United trying to sign a right-sided wing-back, former defender Ferdinand believes Frimpong is the answer along with striker Victor Osimhen and Matheus Cunha. He said on his Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast: I know, sorry Napoli and Galatasaray, if I’m Man United, Osimhen comes to Man United next year, I'm making it happen. Another one I'd go and buy is Cunha. He's made it clear that he wants to leave so I'd go and get Cunha. You know who else I'd go and get? [Jeremie] Frimpong at right wing back.”

Frimpong reportedly has a release clause of around £33 million installed in his Leverkusen contract. Since joining Die Werkself from Celtic in January 2021, the Netherlands international has registered 29 goals and 43 assists in 185 appearances.

Last month, Frimpong got Liverpool fans talking when he was captured greeting Reds players Virgil van Dijk and Ryan Gravenberch with a scouse ascent on Oranje duty. Although he was born in Amsterdam, Frimpong moved to Greater Manchester when he was a child and was a product of Manchester City’s academy.

He has previously admitted he was keen to join Liverpool’s youth set-up but could not travel to Merseyside for training as his parents did not drive. Frimpong was sold to Celtic in September 2019 for just £300,000. The Scottish giants made a monumental profit when he left for Leverkusen for a reported fee of £9.4 million. That has proved a bargain and his price tag has again increased markedly.

In terms of potential right-back targets, Liverpool have also been linked with Flamengo’s Wesley.
